HOUGHTON RENOVATION 2
The brief was to create a new work from home space. The client had worked from home for years and now wanted to create a separate office area. The existing home was a single story where 70% of the building was slab; hence the next logical step was to go up. After a lengthy approval period, the renovations started. Due to space restriction downstairs, a spiral staircase was specified that had been salvaged by the client from an old factory 20 years previously.
It was treated for rust and cut to size. It is an attractive feature and has worked exceptionally well. It was fortunate that the diameter was generous although we still ended up hoisting larger items of furniture up from the outside. The open plan design and floor to ceiling stacking doors, to the exterior, create a flow of energy that inspires those working in this space. A contrast of colours was used to create a dramatic effect enhancing the eclectic art collection and creating a New York apartment look and feel.
The entire space looks directly into giant trees on the neighboring golf course creating a feeling of working in a treehouse. The 4m desk with a floating glass top has created a generous workspace, and the contemporary, Asian style bookshelves add interest and display a lovely collection of research and beautiful books. All the office printers and filing/office requirements are concealed behind the doors in the bookshelves, thus giving this workspace a very comfortable and relaxed feel. A lounge area, two extra bedrooms and a small gym area was also included in this upstairs space. The floors were continued in the downstairs lounge and dining area, and the guest loo was given a fabulous overhaul with Abigail Borg wallpaper. We firmly believe that the guest loo should always have a bit of crazy in it.
